Wood, when no longer alive, is still a material in transition. Spalting is a condition that occurs when a fungus begins to work on wood and lines form in the natural contours. Wood responds to humidity, temperature, and provides nutrients to other plants if it decays in a natural state. The metaphor is more than slightly tortured here...but growth can emerge from even the most fundamental forms. This stabilized piece of wood has been cut to form and joined with handmade sterling elements, and finally capped with a tiny garnet "seed".
